All Our Yesterdays

30th November 1999 - 27th February 2000



The 20th century has seen both triumph and terror. On the eve of the Millennium, the Gallery will be staging an exhibition of some of the finest photographic images drawn from various Collections, including The National Museum of Photography, Film and Television, Bradford and the Hulton Getty Collection.

Bedfordshire Artists

7th March - 4th June 2000

The Gallery houses the Bedford Borough Council Collection of 19th century water-colours, oils and prints. The exhibition will include works never seen before and will highlight Bedfordshire's picturesque past.

The Art of War

13th June - 10th September 2000




'Dead in the Sludge' 1924 by Otto Dix



An exhibition reflecting the changing depiction of conflict from the 18th to the 20th century. This display will include paintings, prints, photographs and poetry. The exhibition will include works from National Collections.

Through the Looking Glass

19th September - 17th December 2000

Drawing on the Gallery's extensive costume Collection this exhibition will also feature watercolours and fashion plates, all of which highlight the surreal and the sublime.

Way Out! Art and Design in the Space Age

4th January - 1st April 2001


The visual arts of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, gave us a modern 'wacky' look. This exhibition will prove nostalgic to those who remember and retro-chic to a younger audience. Drop in, drop out and wallow in cool!

Pressed for Time : The History of Printmaking

10th April - 18th July 2001

A major survey of prints from 16th century woodcuts to the latest in Digital technology.


Wonderland : Children's Book Illustrations

17th July - 28th October 2001


Children's books have been illustrated by some of the leading artists of each generation. Some illustrations have become classics in their own right while others have since been forgotten.
 
This exhibition will delight all ages.

The Great Wave

17th July - 28th October 2001

Throughout the nineteenth century, Japan inspired many artists and designers. This exhibition will explore the special relationship between the two countries through leading artists of the century such as William Burges, Walter Crane, Aubrey Beardsley and the French Impressionists.


Watercolours from the Higgins Collection

6th November 2001 - March 2002


To coincide with the publication of a comprehensive watercolour catalogue, the Gallery will be displaying its most famous watercolours and drawings from artists such as William Blake, Burne-Jones, Constable, Cotman, Cox, De Wint, Freud, Gainsborough, Millais, Henry Moore, Rossetti, Sutherland and Turner.
