Hilary Anderson B.A. Hons. Art and Design
Working in the fields of Drawing, Painting and Textile Design
Abstract and representational Landscape Painting has formed the majority of my output to date. Having lived in several parts of the UK and abroad, I am now based in Bedfordshire.
Much of my childhood was spent on Cornwall's coast and it is this landscape which still influences me. My work is concerned with the evidence of man's occupation of the land, both above and below the ground. The steep hillsides and narrow valleys are pock-marked with shafts, vents and tunnels, mostly hidden by gorse and bracken. Tracks and trails zig-zag between spoil tips, old walls and former settlements. The starting points for my work are always recorded from direct observation of the subject, through drawings and colour sketches. I can then start distilling the information essential for more abstract works, whether it be the colours, moods, atmosphere or patterns and shapes which excite me. The common links between these landscape paintings are the secrets they hold - places which are not often visited or whose uses have been forgotten or abandoned by their creators.
